Accident Injury Program (AI-P)
During a motor vehicle accident, the body could be suddenly thrown forward, backward and/or sideways. These extreme and unpredictable movements can cause the body's soft tissues to stretch beyond their normal range. Injuries can range from bumps and bruises to fractures, dislocations and others that require surgery. Accident Injury (AI) may result in lost work time, difficulty dealing with daily responsibilities, depression and weight gain. After you've had an AI it is essential that you get the right treatment and support as quickly as possible. The effects of the accident can be delayed, subtle and dynamic. Visit your primary medical practitioner as soon as possible to ensure that you are appropriately treated.
To ensure the fullest recovery in the least amount of time, we offer a ONE-STOP therapy program. Our AI-P is one of the most experienced and best in the city. A dedicated team of Health Care Professionals coordinates it including: Physiotherapy, Massage Therapy, Acupuncture, Pilates and Exercise training. Assessments are conducted onsite so that we can identify your injuries and determine how they are impacting your life. We promote early, intensive rehabilitation.
The Process
Our experience working with insurance companies and our excellent relationship with local physicians and specialists will make the post-injury process smoother allowing you to focus on your treatment. In general, anyone who has been injured in an AI is entitled to no fault benefits from the insurance provider regardless of whose fault the accident is.
How to start Physiotherapy for an AI:
- Report your accident to your auto insurance provider. Make sure you get a claim number.
- See your primary health practitioner and explain your injury is from an auto accident. Tell your doctor that you would like a prescription for both Physiotherapy and Massage Therapy. (Physiotherapists do not require a prescription to treat but your insurance company may.)
- Make sure your Adjuster sends you the Accident Claims Benefit Package (ACBP). This package must be filled out and sent in before the insurance company will approve any funding for your treatment.
- In the meantime, book your appointment at UOP. Our therapists will see you right away. Save time by clicking on our Patient Forms link to see what information is required. Be sure to bring your claim number, adjuster's name, telephone number and fax information as well as your prescription. You will also require claim forms from your employment related health benefits if you have any. (In Ontario, you must exhaust your extended health benefits before the auto insurer has to pay any portion of your treatment. For example, if you have $500 of Physiotherapy benefits through work, the law requires that you use that first. Then, the auto insurer will pay the balance of your bill.) Please note: You can have your Physiotherapy assessment before you have received and filled out the ACBP.
- At your assessment we will help you to understand all the above information in detail as well as assess your injuries, the intensity and type of pain, aggravating factors, etc. Your Physiotherapist will develop a customized treatment plan to help you achieve your goals, relieve your pain and regain your function.
