I have a referral from my doctor for physiotherapy. I've never been to physiotherapy so how does it work?

When you call to make the appointment for your initial assessment, the receptionist will ask you what part of your body is the problem. She will also ask you to find out what your specific health coverage is for physiotherapy before coming to your first appointment. For example, are you entitled to partial coverage through OHIP, do you have a benefit plan, did you have a work injury or a car accident? If you need help getting this information, you can call your insurance company (it may be listed in our Insurance section) or we will direct you to the right source.

How much does the treatment cost? How long is it? What is required of me?

As required by law, an initial assessment will be completed. For the assessment there is a one-time cost of $75.00. Individual treatment sessions cost ~ $60 for adults, and $20 for children and seniors.

Treament durations vary by condition and severity. You may only need two to eight visits in many cases. Sometimes, however, your condition may be a little more complicated and you may end up needing several weeks (two to three visits per week) before getting better. Generally, the less time you have had your symptoms, the quicker the recovery time.

You can speak to your therapist to get an idea of how long treatment will be required. You are responsible for attending your appointments, canceling within 24 hours before a scheduled appointment and following your treatment program.

How do I make an appointment?

To make an appointment or to speak with one of our therapists, you can call (905) 389-8772 and ask the receptionist to arrange it for you or you can send your contact information to info@ yourphysio.ca and we will get back to you within 24 hours.

What is involved in the initial assessment?

At your first visit, you will meet your therapist and be asked to fill out a number of forms. There are two parts to the assessment. We will discuss your previous medical history, your current medical situation, your physical limitations and your goals. Then there will be a comprehensive physical assessment to determine any orthopedic problems and to establish your starting point. As assessments often require that the therapist examine the affected area, appropriate attire is recommended. (e.g., for a lower extremity or back problem bring shorts; for an upper extremity problem women should have a tank top or be comfortable in a bra). What is a physiotherapist? What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a form of physical rehabilitation. The main objective of this practice is to help people to maximize their muscular, skeletal and neurological potential to regain or maintain their independence. A Physiotherapist is an expert in movement dysfunction and exercise prescription. Your Physiotherapist can help you live more comfortably even after illness, surgery or injury.

If you are injured or undergo surgery, your physician may prescribe Physiotherapy to help you recover to your fullest ability. Therapy plays a very important part in your recuperation, and you want to be completely sure that your Therapist is the best one for you. UOP therapists are Registered, professional, experienced and knowledgeable. They can help you achieve your recovery goals.

Do you treat backs?

Yes we do. In fact, back pain is the most common condition treated by Physiotherapists and Chiropractors. Therapists, like those at UOP, with expertise in manual therapy have been specially trained to work on every musculoskeletal (involving muscle and bone) area of the body. Whether it is a neck or shoulder, elbow or wrist, hip, knee or foot, we have the knowledge and tools to help you get moving again and resume your pain-free life.

My doctor gave me a referral for another clinic but I would rather come to UOP. Is this possible?

Yes. It does not matter which physiotherapy clinic you go to, as long as the physiotherapists who work there are Registered Physiotherapists, meaning that they are in good standing with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario. At UOP, all of our physiotherapists are registered and because UOP believes in a health team approach, if you give your consent, your doctor will be provided with the results of your assessment, treatment goals and the treatment plan.

I was recently in a car accident. What do I have to do to start physiotherapy treatment?

If you want your treatment to be covered by your auto insurance, you must report the accident first and then contact UOP. It is often advisable to see your family physician who may provide investigative medical tests and prescribe anti-inflammatory, pain and/or muscle relaxant medication. He/she will then likely instruct you to start physiotherapy treatment. Before attending your initial assessment, you must fill out and send in your "Accident Claims Benefit" package. Please note that the insurance company will not approve your treatment until they have received this package. At your initial assessment the therapist will complete the other relevant paper work, and you can start your treatment. Visit the Accident Injury page for more information or contact us at 905-389-8772, info@ yourphysio.ca.

NB. Your insurance company may try to tell which clinic to go to for your treatment BUT the choice is ultimately YOURS. You have the right to choose your own health care provider!!
